"Smoke and Mirrors"

The work is made of "cotten fabric" dipped in Modge Podge, white "tissue paper", "mirror", "string lights", "wire", and "hot glue".

It is a fully hanging peice that is 2 1/2 feet tall and about 2 feet wide.

Above is the process of dipping the white fabric in Modge Podge and letting it dry into solidly bent pieces

Artist Statement:

This piece was inspired by the presentations and chapters of "Theme Park" through the concept that theme parks in general use illusion for immersion. This is commonly done through lighting and color tactics in parks to build a world, unlike the one we live in. "Smoke and mirrors" is a phrase that perfectly encapsulates this harmless trickery and whimsy. The smoke from this phrase is represented in 'flowing' fabric that is stuck in its position, the fabric's smooth lines and white color create shadows and depth to the piece that wouldn't be their otherwise. It directly contrasts with the darkness fo the center mirror, which only uses shards rather then a whole circle, to continue the abstraction of the work. The lights, I later added, illuminate around the mirror and when plugged in mock the lighting often found within fairs and circuses.

On Longing Assignment

 Personal Photo 1:

I chose this photo to highlight the ideas of impermanence as stated in the book. This is my dad's and I'm an old home, which inspired the major part of one of my ideas for the moment. The house is no longer ours hence why it's a memory, but also not permanent. 

Personal Photo 2:

This photo would dive more into the idea of change and new things in life creating memories, this one being the birth of my now 8-year-old niece, not only because I remember it so vividly but also because the change sense then has been before my eyes (her aging).

Personal Photo 3:

This one goes into the idea of lost items and the inavalabitity to get them back. This photo is from the first time I saw snow and how I havent been home to see it sence due to traveling. It would deeply intersting to dive into this idea through ideas in momento sculpture.

Personal Photo 4:

This memory comes from being with another person, also diving into the idea from the quote relation to lost items. The day my sister got her first car, and when me and her drove around in it when I was little. The idea of using two people and an item only using symbolism is very interesting for this project.

Personal Photo 5:

This relates to the first personal photo but instead is My moms and I's first house, that we no longer live in. It would be interesting to find someway to combine the two but also for the idea of loss in memory this would be a great one to dive in.

The first figurative bust, was created using "Air dry-clay", Multicolored "inks", "Modge-Podge", and the tears from "hot glue"

It is 4 inches tall with a slightly rounded bottom to fit the stump base

Sculpture 2#

                                                                 "Chained from Choice"

Made using "air-dry clay", multi-colored "inks", and coated in "Modge-Podge".

Its base is attached at its bottom also made with "clay" colored with "ink".

It also has a chain made entirely of "air-dry clay" and grey/white "ink"

Reflection Statement:

The sculptures titled  "A Constant Cry" and "Chained from Choice" are both intertwined and derive from the same meaning, women's reproductive rights. I wanted to highlight the emotional effect on women that the assigning of choices in reproductive healthcare has caused and showcase it in the idea that we are "chained" to having one choice rather than the multiple we yearn for.

Hence the inclusion of the clay chain to combine the two sculptures together. The stump base came from the idea of representing the woman's body and all its natural and raw aspects. the chain runs down this said "body" to the woman's uterus. I want to in the future dive more into this controversial subject and use it as an inspiration in my art to come.

Cardboard Skulpture

Made using "cardboard", "tissue paper", "hot glue", "pink acrylic spray paint", and "white acrylic paint". Roughly 2 1/2 tall, it is a small doll house constructed with 2 stores and cardboard furniture. (pictured below).

 is accurate to a size 9 women's New Balance shoe. 

The entire piece is the same color from the tan tape.

The main element here for work I want to highlight is "scale" When looking at the original piece digitized one may not see how something that looks like it would be small could be impactful until, till in that same moment you look at the scale of the piece and its unavoidability that makes the piece so loud and powerful

For piece two, It's important to highlight "color/focal point" elements. The color of the text in comparison to the collaged Andy Warhol Bananas highlights the zero it is meant to be forming, as well the banana placement creates readability and draws your eyes to the middle aka once again that zero.

A few of My Favorite Things

 

A Few of My Favorite Things

Item 1: Bows. In this case, just one bow, but bows in general. Bows have become an integral piece of my style over the years, and I can hardly leave the house without at least one.

 

Item 2: My notebook, I've had this thing since the 10th grade, and it has become essential for jotting down daily notes and acting as a day-to-day time capsule.

 

Item 3: My point-and-shoot camera, a newer piece to my collection of things but very quickly became my most used. This cam is one of the best things to save memories but keep me off my phone.

Item 4: This piece represents all my jewelry in general. Most (if not all) of the pieces I own are gifts or thrift so they are wearable little stories I couldn't live without!

 

Item 5: This one is metaphorical in a sense, and I couldn't label it, but I took this picture in this location for a specific reason, sunshine! It is not an item, but I couldn't leave sunshine from the list of things that are my favorite. so, I captured all my items in it.

 

Item 6: claw clips, this cat one is my personal favorite, but in general I love them all. This one is a pretty phase value but plays a huge role in the college lifestyle.

 

Item 7: vintage perfumes, they are one of my many favorite things whether I'm wearing it or not. Because I'm so far from home it's one of the many things I have here that remind me of my mom.

 

Item 8: One of my favorite things to collect since moving here is seashells and oyster shells, and they quickly have moved up in the ranks of things that bring me joy. One of my favorite things to do is put them in an envelope and ship them to people back home.

 

Item 9: finally, this Sonny Angel I got while staying in NYC represents one of my favorite things, little random nick-nacks I collect while traveling, even if it's a little naked baby wearing a bunny hat!
